Many of us are familiar with the marvels of personal computers. What about a computer system that keeps track of everything and everyone that has ever existed? Not only does this vast and accurate system have a record of history, it has countless videotape films and pictures that we can tap into if we are sensitive or intuitive. Some people refer to the objective records as the Akashic Records or Book of Life. These records are not physical nor are they confine to a particular place. They are everywhere. All we need to do is tune into them. Anything that is experienced whether it is a thought, word, desire or action creates a vibration. The vibration remains forever in what is referred to as the unseen etheric energy. Energy leaves an imprint in time and space.. The desires that placed the energy out there are also recorded.

Every experience we have can leave either a good or bad impression. Our choices leave different impressions in the records. The giant computer system is similar to a vast subconscious. The subconscious can be accessed either consciously or unconsciously. The purpose of an accurate record is to actually help us in our growth and transformation. From my own experience and others, we are able to tap into the past, which can serve what is happening to us on many different levels here in the present. The universe is based on love and order. By keeping a record, we can go back in time and heal, forgive and release activity that has hampered our balance and ability to live fully. The challenge is to be able to correctly interpret the records. One must be intuitive, open minded, objective and non judgmental. This can be tricky because it is typical to be heavily influenced by our own belief systems, backgrounds, experiences and personal motives.

When we start digging into the memories stored in the subconscious, it becomes obvious that our challenges today have their roots in choices and decisions made previously. Some teachers feel that if you go straight to God, the memories or karma that is considered to be bad, will automatically be removed without your going through therapy sessions or deep introspection. I know this can happen. One time I offered a workshop on the power of the Holy Spirit. Many people came up to me to be touched and healing happened to them. I remember two men who had come together and their comments. They said that the power of the Holy Spirit washed them clean. They felt that all hindrances and impurities had instantly dropped away.

It is important that we take personal responsibility in shaping the course of our lives and the condition of the world around us. We do effect every soul we encounter and in this way we are ‘co-creators’ in the unfoldment of destiny. Today, there are many people studying subjects that will help with their soul progression. It is one thing to know, and quite another thing to put into daily practice what we do know. It is important to have an ideal and live life doing everything possible to reach the ideal. People commonly blame others for their problems. Not so, we inherit most that happens from ourselves. For those of you who live with challenging personalities, try minimizing their faults and magnifying their virtues.

For you to be able to access your hidden records, realize that you must be sensitive and that it is difficult to interpret the old memories. You will need a detached state of mind, your body at peace and a sense of balance. Using your will and asking a specific question in prayer or meditation can be successfully done under the right conditions. The information must come through form. The form could be a dream, a vision, an intuitive thought, looking at a scene or hearing something that stimulates the hidden. The records, memory bank, are everywhere and will manifest through your consciousness by means of the five senses. Pay attention to what you say, hear, think and write. Why do you want information? Be very clear when you ask for answers. The odds are the answers will come in symbolic form and require interpretation. It is your subconscious that gives you the symbols required to bring the information to the surface in your mind. We are essentially archaeological digs. Persistence and pure intent will get you through the layers of the past and find their way to the surface.

In Sardinia is possible to enjoy a holiday in lots and different ways. The geological nature of the territory, its climate and geographic position make Sardinia a special and unique place.

WHY SARDINIA
Everyone arriving in Sardinia for the first time has the feeling of entering another world consisting of endless spaces and majestic landscapes.
Surrounded by the sea, Sardinia, in fact, features a unique, unmatched territory.
The island, due to its insular position and historical events, is one of the Mediterranean areas where popular traditions are less contaminated by the outside world.
Just think of the fascinating domus de janas, the origin of nuraghes or tombe dei giganti (the giants’ tombs), the Sacred Wells, the mysterious menhir dating back to the Bronze Age.

BEACHES AND NATURE
Costa Smeralda is surely the most renowned place in Sardinia not only for its constant society life, but also for its unforgettable beauty.

A charming and contradictory environment, characterized by the wild and proud Mediterranean shrub-land (Macchia or Maquis), strange-shaped white granite rocks, beaches, coves and bays that your eyes have never seen yet.

Created in 1962 thanks to a daring and innovative project, Costa Smeralda always rejected the idea of becoming a devastating concrete wave that confronts the sea, and chose to be an example of urban development for the world-wide seaside tourism.

Costa Smeralda keeps its peculiarity and it’s a model of progress, success and development that preserves a magnificent and sometimes majestic heaven; uncontaminated but never impenetrable; wild and hospitable at the same time.

Its name is a homage to its green and turquoise waters, embraced by white and fine sandy beaches which are themselves caressed by the sweet waves of its clear and transparent waters.

Are there uncontaminated beaches in the Mediterranean Sea?
Are there dream places even far from Caraibi?
Of course! You can find them in Sardinia! The Gulf of Orosei is probably the most fascinating area of the Island and it is ready to offer you all its splendour and all the colours, scents and sensations that only few beaches in the world can boast.
Far from the sumptuous society life and the world of fake-VIPs, far from the stressful “beach-umbrella fights”, far from the stereotypes but close to the beautiful and gratifying view you dream of.
Are you ready to go on a binge of beauty?
There’s a Sardinia made of sport, fun and real life just waiting for you!

ART AND ARCHAEOLOGY
Megalithism spread on the island from 2500-1800 BC, with dolmen – simple burial chambers made of massive upright stones set into the ground and covered by a capstone and by perdas fittas (pierced stones), monoliths forming a circle that often bordered the tombs. Towards the 16th century, the nuragic civilization developed, leaving 7000 nuraghes behind; the latter is a megalithic construction with one or more towers, interconnected with each other between galleries and ring-like corridors, with central aisle, pointed arch, defensive terraces and brackets.
Usually, near Nuraghi there are the Giants’ Tombs, collective megalithic burial places formed by a corridor covered with exedras and bordered by smooth plates, with central monolithic stele and doorway called “delle anime” stand. The cult of water was evidence of religious faith and in its honor well temples or sacred wells were raised: these constructions feature ceiling stairs down to the level of groundwater (wells) under a false dome structure. The construction technique is more refined than that used for nuraghes, as witnessed by the sacred well of Santa Cristina in the province of Oristano.

It can be a daunting task to choose a camp, however, with over 11,000 camps in the United States. And, even if you were an 8-week camper as a kid, there are trends that have changed the face of the camping industry in the last few years. If you are aware of these trends, it can be helpful in guiding you to the right program for your child.

CAMPS

Shorter sessions & more oversight. Many full season camps have moved to 2 shorter sessions and many camps now offer 2 week sessions to allow parents to fit in a residential camp experience around their many other activities. In addition, most longer term camps are now offering short, introductory sessions for younger kids that could last anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks. In many cases, this short term “taste of camp” is as much for the parents’ sake as for the kids. Some camps have relaxed their communication policies, allowing phone calls or on-line sites to view camper pictures. For some parents, these new approaches make the decision to send a child to camp a little easier.

Allergies & Medications. With the rise in allergies, camps have responded in a couple of ways. Some camps have moved to a peanut free environment to eliminate the risk completely. (So much for those kids who used to go away to camp and live off of peanut butter and white bread as an alternative to the hot meals!) There are even gluten-free camps for kids with Celiac disease. Many camps are relying heavier on outside companies to package camper medications in daily dosages and then send them to the camp for distribution. With so many children on “meds” these days, shoring up camp medication policies has been a focus for many camps.

A Camp within a Camp. You still want the feel of a traditional summer camp, but you want your child to improve their horsemanship, tennis backhand, or make the school basketball team in the fall. There is a movement in summer camps toward specialty camps WITHIN traditional camp settings. With so many camps in the United States and parents researching camps by search engine, camps must differentiate themselves in ways that they never have before. In addition, parents are looking for specialized programming at a younger age. To meet this demand, you can find specialties such as culinary arts, fencing, science, foreign language, horseback, tennis or golf within a traditional camp session. Circus Arts has become the “new gymnastics” and so popular that camps are spending thousands (maybe millions) of dollars erecting trapeze courses and tight ropes and indoor pavilions dedicated to this “high-flying” activity. Circus Arts gives kids a safe, “extreme” sport, while giving them impressive new abilities and teaching them an original form of creative or performing arts. Where gymnastics appeals only to girls, circus arts gives co-ed camps a leg up in attracting boys as well.

Specialty Camps. If parents weren’t campers themselves, they might not know the benefits of a long-term, traditional camp experience. In addition, many parents feel the need to fit in as much as possible during the summer, not unlike the year-round focus to shuttle kids from one after school program to another. Therefore, specialty camps have sprung up all over the place in offerings such as rock music, creative writing, aviation, sports broadcasting, skateboarding or robotics. Specialized programs in the culinary arts have also become more and more popular. And, of course, there are specialty camps for almost every sport, whether your child is trying to build an interest in a particular sport or trying to perfect a sport for a fall tryout.

Enrichment programs. For many years, there have been pre-college programs for high school kids, but more recently there has been a rise in enrichment programs for younger kids. Starting in 4th grade, a child could spend 1 – 6 weeks in an enrichment program where they would live at a boarding school or college campus in a dorm room, eat in a community dining hall, take classes of special interest, participate in recreational activities and take part in organized field trips. The type of “academics” the kids are exposed to in an enrichment program is far different from the rigor of the school year: how often does an AP track kid get to take a workshop in Lego engineering or the Science of Superheroes? Unusually these programs allow both for the child who needs remedial coursework to help with a learning deficit or a challenge course to supplement a different child’s quest for knowledge.

Special Needs. Kids with ADD & ADHD used to be labeled as “special needs” kids. Now, every camp has kids with ADD and those directors do not even consider it an accommodation. Today, many mainstream camps will admit blind kids, deaf kids, kids with Asperger’s and cerebral palsy. They see a benefit to the other campers learning compassion and learning how to accommodate a child with differences. If a parent doesn’t want their child to stand out, however, there are also dedicated camps for kids with all sorts of differences, like Prader Willi, Williams Syndrome, Downs Syndrome, and more severe forms of autism.

Summer opportunities can help your child develop new interests, open their mind, choose a new direction, or make lifelong friends. As a parent, you need to ask yourself what your child needs over the summer and then you can match them with the appropriate program. Perfectly matched summer programs can have a profound impact upon your child and help them develop life-long passions. But, these programs are not inexpensive. So, when choosing, know all of the options and make a wise choice for your child.

####

Trends for Teens

When it comes to summer camps and teen program trends, parents seem to be driving the train. Whether it is “helicopter parents” demanding more communication with their children while they are away or parents demanding peanut free environments, camp and teen trip directors must adapt to a changing society. In the last 15 years, summer programming for teens has become a very competitive industry. Each program must differentiate itself in some way and stay one step ahead of the curve. By this time, program directors have evaluated what worked best for their participants last summer and are now busy trying to be on the “cutting edge” for next summer. Teen program directors walk the fine line of trying to use the “build it and they will come” philosophy, while appealing to both parents’ wishes and those of the teens.

So, what are the trends that are driving the teen summer program industry? There is a demand for shorter programs to accommodate the schedules of busy teens. Programs have to be planned around summer school, sports commitments, or family vacations. Parents want more “bang for the buck.” While programs abroad used to be strictly delineated between language programs, community service, or adventure travel, today your teen could choose one program in which she could do all three. Program directors are starting to plan their itineraries to attract more boys, because girls tend to dominate the travel industry. One director planned more trips to China because boys are interested in ancient Chinese warriors. Here are some other trends and unique programs for summer 2008 to help you and your child think outside the box:

TEEN PROGRAMS

Options for “Tweens”. Kids may skip the whole traditional camp experience and seek a non-camp experience later. Because teen program directors have realized that middle school age kids are looking for new and exciting programs, these “tweeners” have a world of options open to them now. Most language requests used to be for Spanish and French, now there are language programs for Chinese, Japanese and Arabic. Spanish may still be your child’s passion, so how about a community service program in Costa Rica? If your 7th grader is interested in saving the world, there are marine science sailing programs in the British Virgin Islands where they can participate in turtle conservation. Most adventure travel programs that used to be dedicated solely to high school students, now offer the same types of experiences to 6th, 7th & 8th graders, customized to their maturity level and educational experience.

Community Service. How do we teach our children the value of “giving back,” of appreciating what they have? Or, more pragmatically, how do we complete those high school community service requirements? This is no small task for a parent, but more easily accomplished through a quality community service program. Your child can assist in the construction of new classrooms in India or work with orphans in Russia. Your child can work on hurricane reconstruction on the Gulf Coast or teach tennis to underprivileged kids in urban areas.

Internships. Does your child have a specific interest in a career path? Do you want them to gain experience in that field? If so, this is the option for your child. In an internship program, your child can work side by side with professionals in their area of interest – from Archaeology to Fashion Design, from Medical Research to Strategic Studies. Up to now, this type of internship experience has been organized mainly in England, but now they are springing up in large U.S. cities, like New York City, Boston and Philadelphia, run by reputable teen program directors. After their daily “work,” the staff organizes evening activities, weekend excursions and college visits for the participants. They are housed on safe college campuses.

Language programs. Though learning a foreign language is not a new concept, combining it with other interests in clearly a new phenomenon. Plus, your teen can dabble in rare languages, like Arabic, Modern Greek, or Swedish right here in the U.S. Many language programs abroad incorporate a home stay, where a student is matched with a family in order to reinforce the language of study while enriching the student’s experience through cultural exchange and community service. Some students will forego the home stay experience to focus on another interest. Perhaps your child wants to study painting, photography or cooking while learning Italian. Or, maybe your child wants to study architecture in Switzerland while learning French.

More Exotic & Intensive Teen Travel. The travel programs are responding to the fact that parents want a bigger “bang for the buck.” Now a child can live with a host family in a rural village, hike to ancient ruins, and help build a school for kids — all in a 4-week trip. Teen travel programs used to focus on traditional destinations like Western Europe or Central America. Now, there is a trend to the more exotic. It is not uncommon to find teen programs that travel to Senegal, Bolivia or Cambodia. While these programs used to be about visiting busy tourist attractions, some have morphed into mini think tanks, undertaking the study of global issues. One such program for next year will take students and turn them into global awareness “action corps” groups. They might study health care and global health care issues in Ghana, or community development in El Salvador, or biodiversity in Madagascar. While in those countries, they would participate alongside local friends and experts before returning to the U.S. to develop and present plans for continuing action.

College Campus Academic Study Programs. Whether purely for enrichment or college credit, academic programs are much in demand. They give high school students a taste of what it’s like to live on a college campus. In addition to academic study, each program offers SAT Prep, college tours, leadership programs, a range of sports programs, visits to local attractions as well as weekend excursions to nearby cities. The directors of these programs are always looking to provide unusual course offerings. Course studies range from architecture to advertising, economics to environmental science.

Gap Year Programming. U.S. students are one of the few countries in which kids follow a traditional path from high school to college to graduate school to profession. Our students are finally mirroring the desire of their foreign counterparts and taking some time off between high school and college. They now even have a name for it – “the Odyssey.” Your graduate can sail around the world or live with a family in a rural village in Kenya, help teach in the village secondary school, offer extracurricular activities and initiate and participate in community service projects. There are summer programs for graduates and programs that range from 3 months to a full year of study or travel. These are great for the graduate who does not start their college experience until January, too.

Summer programs can provide alternative and enriching opportunities for kids of all ages. Whatever type of program you and your child choose, you want it to be a well-run, well-supervised, enriching experience. With all of the choices available, it can be helpful to talk to a camp and teen trip consultant to help you formulate the right questions and guide you to the right program. Happy camping!

Egypt and Kenya represent 2 very different sides of Africa in terms of travelers’ attractions. This is true in all aspects – history, culture and the people. On the one hand is Egypt, rich in history and archaeology and on the other hand is Kenya, famous for the Safari.

At tour of Africa combining the African wildlife Safari experience of Kenya and the sojourn into the ancient civilization of Egypt is a not so resistible to serious travelers

Getting the right flow of Your Egypt and Kenya Tour program

You can never have enough time off your work schedule to see enough of Egypt. And to add an African Safari to it makes it appear like an impossible task to accomplish. But it can be done. To enjoy this combined tour, it is advisable to put aside at least 16 days – 14 days for your actual tours and the extra days for your flights into and out of Africa. It is of course possible to have shorter versions of the combination, but it might not work out so well.

Assuming your begin your tour at Cairo and not Nairobi, you will need at least 2 days in Cairo just for the antiquities in and around Cairo. This will include the Pyramids and the museums.

Next, dedicate at least 2 full days for Luxor to enough of the attractions in and around Luxor. Traveling from Cairo to Luxor can be either by bus, overnight train or air. The choice will depend on how much time you would like to save and also on your pocket. The bus journey can get very uncomfortable in the hot weather. The flight is fast, but might be expensive.

The Nile Cruise demands at least 3 days for meaningful sightseeing before your return to Cairo and take the flight from North Africa to East Africa.

It is recommended that you rest for a night in Nairobi, Kenya before starting your wildlife adventure. A fulfilling Safari in Kenya would take up at least 7 of your days. That would allow you to visit some of the famous national parks. If you choose to take your safari by road as a means of transport, beware of the road conditions into the parks. The distances might appear short but the drive could be grueling due to the nature of the roads. Transportation by air by save you time and enhance your experience too. If your flight out is not a late evening flight, try to spend your last night in Nairobi so that you have enough time on your side.

EGYPT – Places you must visit while in Egypt
Traveling to Egypt is like turning back the clock. There are marvelous footprints of ancient man’s stroll on earth. Anyone interested in man’s ancient civilization thinks of Egypt. And this is with very good reasons. Because there are just too many intriguing and wonderfulthings in Egypt – the pyramids, the temples, the tombs, the Nile and many more.

The Great Pyramids of Giza are the last surviving members of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. It has been a tourist destination for centuries and continues to draw immense interest from all over the world. Each of the 3 main pyramids here is a tomb to a different Pharaoh. The Sphinx, a huge lion-like sculpture lies in front of the pyramids, keeping guard.

Luxor is Egypt’s most impressive archeological spectacles. The Temple of Luxor was the center of one of the most important festivals celebrated by the people of Thebes. This important festival was known as the festival of Opet. Built largely by Amenhotep III and Ramesses II, it appears that the temple’s purpose was for a suitable setting for the rituals of the festival. The festival itself was to reconcile the human aspect of the ruler with the divine office. The temple of Luxor is worth touring while you are in Egypt.

The Temple of Karnak.

One of the most impressive archaeological sites in Egypt is Karnak. Even though it is badly ruined, it stands as the largest temple complex ever built by man. The Temple of Karnak is actually made up of three main temples, smaller enclosed temples, and several outer temples located about 3 kilometers north of Luxor. Karnak is actually the site’s modern name. Its ancient name was Ipet-isut, meaning “The Most Select (or Sacred) of Places”.

The Valley of the Kings

The site today called the Valley of the Kings is a secluded dry gully were all the kings and occasionally other high officials of the 18th Dynasty were buried.

The Nile Cruise

In spite of the fact there are other means of transportation available for you while on your great historical and archaeological adventures, the Nile Cruise still remains an exciting way to enjoy your sight-seeing in Egypt. The cruise starts from Luxor or Aswan. From Luxor, the tours cruise down the Nile to Esna, Edfu, Kom Ombo, and end in Aswan.

You can also fly from Cairo direct to Aswan and then work your way northwards down the Nile to the same sights – Kom Ombo, Edfu, Esna and end up at Luxor.

For the Nile Cruise, there are many options to choose from depending on your budget and desire for comfort. Many of the cruise ships offer a considerable variety in form of entertainment on board. .

Other Interesting sights in Egypt

Depending on the number of days you have, and your budget of course, the other interesting areas you would want to include in your program are Abu Simbel - 3 hours away by road from Aswan. Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Hathor are of interest.

Alexandria is just 2 hours 30 minutes by road or train from Cairo. The pace of life is much slower than Cairo.

The Red Sea resorts of Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada are a big hit with divers. And travelers who enjoy nightlife will find their comfort zone here too, as it is filled with nightclubs. Those traveling with kids will also find the Red sea idea – the beaches.

KENYA – What to include on your Kenya Safari portion of the tour
Kenya is the wildlife safari’s paradise. For the African wildlife lovers, there are over 50 game reserves, parks and private game sanctuaries spread all around the country. And accommodation in the main cities and even in the parks provide services of international standards. You will find hotels run by top international companies like Fairmont Hotels and Resorts and Intercontinental.

Game viewing in Kenya is simply stunning. Some of the wonderful parks you are encouraged to visit are the Maasai Mara game reserve. At the Mara you will see the big five -Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard and Buffalo. At Amboseli National park you are not likely to leave without seeing elephants – living side by side with the most celebrated culture in the world, the Maasai people.

Samburu game reserve is home to the Samburu people and the Reticulated Giraffe and Beisa Oryx. Tsavo National park – for the Hippos and Lake Nakuru National park – for the flamingos and Rhinos.

If you include the famous Maasai Mara in your travel program, and you travel between June and October, you might witness the great animal migration. The wildebeest and zebra start their migration from Tanzania’s Serengeti in May and arrive Maasai Mara during July. They begin the return journey back into Tanzania towards the end of October.

This animal migration is an experience beyond belief. Many have described it as one of the most impressive wildlife spectacles. A hot-air balloon flight over the dotted plains of the Maasai Mara will enhance your experience of seeing this great spectacle.

We won’t even bother with the obvious ones: California is absolutely full of theme parks. And let’s not waste time reviewing Disneyland and Six Flags. You don’t need a review to tell you whether your kids will love theme parks.

Rather, we’ll try to focus on the other California vacation spots kids love. It seems that, after the theme parks, California is full of vineyards which, let’s face it, bore the heck out of anyone under 21 (depending on how rebellious the teens are, that is). However, California has its share of family friendly spots where you won’t find anyone dressed as a cartoon character.

A Brief Disclaimer:

Keep in mind that none of these places are guaranteed to delight each and every kid in the world, as each kid has different tastes and interests, but we’ll try to provide enough variety that you can find something that seems custom tailored to what really gets your kids excited.

La Brea Tar Pits

What makes the La Brea Tar Pits and the attached museum so appealing to kids is the sheer dramatic entertainment value provided. More than just a bunch of dusty relics with plaques explaining where they came from, the museum is full of millennia old skeletons, animatronic displays, stuffed saber tooth tigers and audio video presentations on ancient life. You can even watch an archaeology team in progress on some days. It’s the closest you’ll get to a dinosaur theme park without any roller coasters.

Los Angeles County Art Museum

This one depends on the kids. Some kids would go nuts over an art museum while others would just go nuts with boredom. If your kids are the artsy types, the LA County Art Museum can really have a positive impact. The art is collected from all over the world and in the traditional styles, with very little in the way of abstract or modern art. Here you’ll find three stories of classic European and Asian sculptures and paintings, as well as some more recent works from Norman Rockwell and other American artists. For a young artist, it’s a religious experience, but for anyone else, it’s kind of a snooze.

Redwood National and State Parks

Along the coast of northern California (rent a car and drive the coast if you can) you’ll find the Redwood National and State Parks area, one of the natural California vacation spots kids love, covering more than a hundred thousand acres. This whole area of California is sort of a Mecca for American nature lovers. It’s home to the Sequoia, perhaps more commonly known as the California Redwood, the largest trees in the world. The scenery is breathtaking, and the area is home to several endangered species including northern spotted owls, Steller’s sea lions, and the bald eagle. This is one of the best places you could hope to take an outdoorsy type of kid.

Hollywood, CA

Everyone loves movies, but if you plan a trip to Hollywood, a brief warning may be in order: If you’re bringing kids, visit the Grauman’s Chinese Theater, the Walk of Fame, and the Wax Museum, take a picture of the famous sign and call it a day. These parts of town are very cool, the rest – not so much. Many of the famous landmarks have been destroyed. Of course, if you know which spots to hit, this can be one of the California vacations kids love.

Biological Field SchoolMaderas Rainforest Conservancy Costa Rica and Nicaraguawww.maderasrfc.org

Executive MBA (New York)AACSB Accredited Top University 100% Delivered in Singaporewww.cuny.edu.sg

Is there still a lot of work in this field of work these days?

Yes indeed. Archaeological investigations are conducted every year because of cultural resource management laws which were written to protect, among other things, archaeological sites. According to the latest United States Department of Labor Statistics, jobs for archaeologists will continue to grow over the foreseeable future.

What is the best part about being an archaeologist?

My favorite part about being an archaeologist has always been the people you meet, the travel involved, and the fact that one day is almost never like the next.

How many archaeological sites have you been on?

I’m not sure, but for sure I would say I’ve worked on hundreds of archaeological sites over my twenty year career. Archaeological projects vary a great deal. In some cases, excavations at a single site can last years or decades, while in others, a few hours is all that’s required.

How much money can you make in this field?

If you get an advanced degree (MA or PhD), you can earn enough to have a house with a mortgage and raise a family, but archaeology has never been the place to get rich.

How many years of schooling does this job take?

That depends on what kind of job you end up getting. If you plan to teach as a college professor, you will need a PhD. If you plan to run archaeological investigations as a Principal Investigator for a cultural resource management firm, you will need an MA. There are other career paths to explore as well.

What is a typical day like for an archaeologist?

I’ve retired from the field, so my typical day involves sitting in front of a computer, or doing research in a library someplace or calling someone on the phone. But once upon a time I did practice archaeology, and I talked other people into describing what their days are like. That collection of stories is called An Hour in the Life, and that can give you a taste of what the field is really like.

What is the worst part about your job?

When I was in the field, I hated being the first person to tell a farmer that the proposed new highway was going to take his farmstead.

How many hours a day do you work?

That really varies. If you’re in the field, some days last as long as the sunlight does; but that is under unusual circumstances. Usually labor laws restrict your crew from working more than eight hours in any one given day.

What type of weather do you work in?

We conduct field work in all kinds of weather, rain, snow, sun, too hot, too cold. Archaeologists do pay attention to safety issues (not in lightning storms or during flooding, for example), but that doesn’t mean a little rain or hot day will hurt us.

What advice would you give for someone interested in this career?

First, join your local archaeological society, to meet others with your same interest and learn about local opportunities. Then, I always tell people they should sign up for an archaeology training course called a field school. Many field opportunities are available–even for kids in high school, such as the Crow Canyon Project. I’ve also compiled some suggestions for high school and middle school students who are thinking about archaeology: Studying Archaeology in High School.

How did you become interested in this career?

I stumbled onto archaeology as a career after I’d tried a few other things. I’d read some books, and then I found out some old friends had become archaeologists. So, a field school came up the summer I turned 28 and I was hooked after that. More details about that decision can be found in the collection of files called How to Become an Archaeologist.

What skills do you need to become successful in this career?

I think you need to be able to adapt to change fairly rapidly, think on your feet, write well, and get along with lots of different people.

What states do most archaeologists work in?

Archaeologists work everywhere in the world. In the US and most developed parts of world, much archaeology is conducted by the government as part of cultural resource management. In terms of academic archaeological endeavors, nearly everywhere in the world (with the exception of Antarctica) is visited by some archaeologist from somewhere at sometime.

Are there online courses I can take?

Some universities around the world are developing online courses, and there is one PhD program that I’m aware of that is primarily online. Of course, archaeology has a large field component and that cannot be conducted online. See Distance Learning Opportunities for your options.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve ever found?

That is hard to say, because often the most interesting things are ideas rather than objects. I once found the remains of a 19th century brick kiln and learned that it was a part-time job for the farmer. I once found the ruins of what looked like a Maya ball court in the middle of Iowa. I once discovered that it’s best to keep your notes under a rock when working on the top of a hill. I once found that intuition and experience does pay off if you’re patient enough.

What was your first dig like?

Like most people, my first excavation experience was at an archaeology field school. My first field school was at Plum Grove, the territorial home of the first governor of Iowa.

How long does it take to dig an average site?

There are no “average sites” in archaeology, nor average excavations. The time you spend on a site depends for the most part on what you intend to do with it: does it need to be recorded, tested, or fully excavated? You can record a site in as little as an hour; you can spend years excavating an archaeological site.

Is being an archaeologist fun?

Well, it doesn’t pay very well, and there are distinct hardships to the life: so if you don’t find it very fun, then it is not the job for you. For those of us who love the fieldwork, then it is the best job on the planet.
